meet the shepherdess
Shauna is a sixth-generation farmer from Canada with a deep-rooted passion for agriculture, particularly in sheep farming, which she inherited from her father. Despite her family’s farming legacy, Shauna is a first-generation wool farmer, having ventured into the world of sheep and wool production independently. Her journey into agriculture began with a formal education in agriculture at the University of Guelph’s Kemptville Campus, where she honed her skills and knowledge in animal husbandry and farm management.
Originally drawn to horses, Shauna’s interests expanded to include knitting after receiving lavender baby alpaca yarn from her friend, Lesley. This gift sparked Shauna’s lifelong love for fiber arts, and she fondly remembers knitting her first cowl, which has become a cherished winter accessory. Her fascination with sheep grew during her studies at Kemptville, despite her father already maintaining a small flock. Determined to deepen her understanding, Shauna enrolled in the Ontario Sheep Master Shepherds course, where she was notably the only participant without existing sheep.
In 2019, Shauna took a significant step in her farming journey by acquiring her own flock of seven mixed-breed ewes. The decision was spontaneous yet calculated, made in the back seat during a road trip with friends to the Ontario Sheep convention. Prior to this, Shauna had purchased her farm in Radford in 2017 but had to wait patiently while saving up to construct a new barn. For two years, she rented facilities before finally realizing her dream of moving into her own barn in November 2020. Despite the ongoing projects and challenges, Shauna finds solace and fulfillment in her farm, describing it as her favorite place to be.
